Patient Stories – Evelyn

For me it started with a car accident. I injured my back. I did physical therapy and a lot of pain management, but I still suffered from constant pain. I am a school teacher, so it made it more difficult for me to do my job. It kept getting progressively worse. This went on for 4 or 5 years.

How did you find Dr. McCance

I went to Dr. McCance because my aunt had back surgery with him. My aunt and my cousin were raving about him. My aunt’s situation was really very severe—she was almost paralyzed. And Dr. McCance worked his magic.

Why did you choose Dr. McCance for your spine surgery?

I went in with a laundry list of questions and he answered every single question and more. Very patient man. Very detailed in his explanations—in layman’s terms. His staff—I can’t speak any higher about his staff—from his receptionist to his Physician Assistants. Very professional. Very courteous. I can’t speak any higher of this man.

He showed me everything in detail. Showing me exactly where my problem was. Where the disks collapsed. I had to get a 3 disk fusion. He told me exactly what he’d be doing in the surgery. And he takes the time to listen to you. It really blew me away.

His office staff did anything and everything they could to help me. Making appointments. Calling my insurance companies. Making sure certain tests are covered under your insurance. Not every office does that—you have to do your own phone calls. The Physician Assistants, whenever you call, you always get an answer. They get back to you within an hour. The turnaround time is amazing.

How did you feel after your surgery?

Dr. McCance’s bedside manner is unbelievable—he holds your hand; he tells you you’re going to be OK. Right before the surgery, right after the surgery, he’s there. When you’re waking up, he’s there. I could hear him. “It’s doctor McCance. I’m here. Are you OK? You did well.” He’s very gentle. Very soft spoken. Very thoughtful. It’s just amazing that someone with that much professional stature—not everyone is as soft spoken as he is. Excellent after-care from the doctor and his staff.
